Frequently Asked Questions
What is Total Referee?

Total Referee is a comprehensive membership program designed to train and develop referees to perform at the highest levels, akin to top professional referees globally. Our program is led by Matthew Conger, a distinguished member of New Zealand's FIFA panel for 12 years. Our goal is to provide opportunities for referees to enhance their skills and advance their officiating careers.
Who can benefit from Total Referee's programs?
Our programs are ideally suited for referees who are committed to advancing their skills and taking their officiating to the next level. While anyone interested in improving as a referee can benefit, the financial investment is best suited for those who are serious about their development in the sport, rather than those who view refereeing solely as a side job.
Total Referee is really expensive, is it worth it?
We recognize the investment required for Total Referee. However, when considering the cost relative to other training options, our program offers significant value. For example, personalized soccer-specific referee fitness plans often exceed $450 per month elsewhere, and a single game assessment from a National Referee coach can cost $125 plus travel expenses. Our program provides personalized fitness plans crafted by one of the country's top soccer referee sport scientists and multiple match incident reviews in each coaching session, offering unparalleled value and investment return.
What types of training programs does Total Referee offer?
Total Referee offers virtual training sessions led by Matthew Conger, focusing on detailed reviews of actual match clips in small group settings. Each session lasts about an hour, typically covering two incidents per session. We also provide fitness training through the same platform used by professional referees, ensuring that our members receive top-tier fitness guidance.
How do I sign up for a Total Referee training program?
To join our training program, simply sign up for an account on our website, select your preferred membership plan, and our team will reach out to you to complete the necessary information and forms to get you started.
What qualifications do Total Referee instructors have?
Matthew Conger, our lead small group coach, has served on the FIFA Panel of referees for New Zealand for 12 years, participating in two World Cups, two Olympic Games, three FIFA Club World Cups, and other prestigious international competitions. Our Sport Scientist holds a Master's in Sport Medicine, is a college professor, and is certified by reputable organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
How much do Total Referee programs cost?
We offer two pricing options: a month-to-month plan for $350 and an annual commitment priced at $300 per month.
Can you just provide me training for my fitness test?
At this time, we do not offer isolated training for fitness tests as these assessments typically represent minimum standards. Our programs are designed to exceed these minimums by strengthening your overall fitness and performance capabilities.
Are there any scholarships or financial aid options available for Total Referee programs?
Currently, we do not offer scholarships. We encourage state governing bodies interested in subsidizing costs for their referees to contact us at bhale@totalreferee.com to explore potential partnerships.
What materials will I need for Total Referee training sessions?
You will need a reliable internet connection on a computer or smartphone. For coaching sessions, please send clips from your matches 48 hours in advance. For fitness training, our Sport Scientist will consult with you during onboarding to ensure compatibility between your available equipment and the prescribed exercises.
What certification will I receive after completing Total Referee training?
Total Referee does not provide formal certifications or assessments as we are an independent training organization focused on skill enhancement and professional development.
How will Total Referee training improve my refereeing skills?
Our approach focuses on the complete decision-making process, not just the outcomes. This method helps develop deeper thinking and better positioning to make optimal calls. Additionally, personalized fitness programs tailored by our Sport Scientist will address any physical shortcomings, ensuring you are always in the best position to perform.
I am the director/administrator for a group of referees, and I would like to discuss a group rate for the lead up into a big tournament/event. What do you offer?
We welcome discussions about group rates and tailored programs for teams preparing for significant events. Please reach out to us at bhale@totalreferee.com to discuss how we can best support your referees' needs.
